Ocean Scientist » Australia - The key duties of the position include The Bureau undertakes research in fulfilment of its responsibilities as a national research agency, contributing to the development of weather and climate applications for the needs of the Australian community, supporting the Bureau's operational services, and advancing meteorological and earth system science in Australia and globally. The Bureau of Meteorology Research Program, in collaboration with the operational areas of the Bureau, carries out the main research activities in the Bureau in the areas of Earth System Modelling (ESM) including weather, ocean, seasonal and climate prediction. The research work is carried out on high performance computing (HPC) platforms at the Bureau and at a collaboration site, the National Computational Infrastructure (NCI), based at Australian National University. The Ocean Modelling Research Scientist will be a member of the Ocean Modelling Team in the Research Program. The Ocean Modelling Team is responsible for advancing the science and development of the ocean, wave and sea-ice components of the Bureau's Earth System models across all spatial and temporal scales. You will assist in the implementation, update and porting of ocean and sea ice numerical source codes to the Bureau/NCI HPC systems and provide support for modelling systems that underpin current operational services. The position will contribute scientifically towards research encompassing the Indian, Pacific and Southern Oceans. The Ocean Modelling Research Scientist will: Have knowledge in physical oceanography and numerical ocean models. Knowledge of sea ice physics and modelling is desirable Design and undertake high-level investigations and assessments, under supervision, of the global and regional ocean and sea ice models and forecast systems. The AAD also has responsibility for administering the Australian Antarctic Territory and the Territory of Heard Island and McDonald Islands. The AAD Science Branch leads, conducts and supports a world class program of scientific research and environmental management, consistent with national priorities through the Australian Antarctic Science Strategic Plan.
