We look forward to hearing from you. For further details on this opportunity please contact SelectorSydSpencerStuart.com This closing date for this position is Monday 11th March. Advertised: 20 Feb 2024 E. Australia Standard Time Applications close: 11 Mar 2024 E. Australia Standard Time This week we are beginning our 'People behind the water' series. We will be spotlighting a different Seqwater staff member each Tuesday so you can learn a little more about the individuals who help provide safe, reliable and affordable drinking water for South East Queensland. Our first spotlight is Somerset Dam Operator, Michael W “I started working for Seqwater in October 2016, through an engineering and consultancy company called Wood Group after the two businesses established a partnership to maintain the SEQ Water Grid and water supply assets. I started as a mechanical fitter in the South East Queensland central sub-region, working at places like Wivenhoe, Somerset Dam and the Mt Crosby Water Treatment Plants. I enjoyed the work so much that I successfully applied for a position as an Seqwater dam operator at Somerset Dam in February 2018, a role I still love to this day. My work responsibilities centre around maintaining and operating Somerset Dam, which involves looking after all the equipment used to operate gates and regulators, surveillance and monitoring of all instrumentation, site maintenance – generally taking care of this amazing asset. I really enjoy the feeling of being part of a great team and have a real sense of ownership for Somerset Dam. I take pride in making sure the site always looks its best and that everything operates exactly as it should. I also love working outside – it’s really such a beautiful place to come to work. I reckon I have the best job in the world, working at one of the best dams in Australia.” “Without energy, water supply systems simply can’t operate. And it takes a lot of energy to extract, pump, treat and transport water across South East Queensland, so it’s important we’re making sure we are using energy effectively. But while it takes energy to produce water, water can also produce energy. At Seqwater, we have several hydroelectricity plants at places like Somerset and Wivenhoe Dams that can convert the energy of moving water into electricity. As Lead Energy Advisor at Seqwater, I primarily assist the organisation in implementing its Corporate Energy Strategy and Environment and Sustainability policy. Seqwater has implemented an energy management system and is investigating, planning and implementing the delivery of a range of energy management measures, including progressing energy efficiency and renewable energy opportunities. I also focus on examining our operations and finding ways to lower our electricity costs and improve our infrastructure and processes, so they are more energy-efficient and reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. I came from an engineering background – my father and uncle were both civil engineers so I aspired to be an engineer from a young age. I started as an electrical engineer working in the energy industry until a brief stint in a hydroelectricity plant that got me interested in the energy and water nexus. Energy and water aren’t generally considered in tandem but there is a certainly a strong relationship between how much water is used to generate and transmit energy, and how much energy it takes to produce and transport drinking water. We have been building our energy-focused team at Seqwater over the years and it’s been a challenging and rewarding experience getting across all of the different energy initiatives and helping to reduce Seqwater’s carbon footprint to improve the organisation’s environmental and financial sustainability.” “People in our community are often viewing my work, especially in times of drought when water supplies may be lower than normal. I model and analyse water security data. The work includes short-term analysis such as using bulk water readings to assess water consumption across South East Queensland, which we publish on the Seqwater website. I also undertake long-term forecasting for how water consumption may change years into the future. At Seqwater, it’s important we obtain and analyse the data we collect, otherwise we risk missing out on identifying important information on trends and changes that can assist with our water security planning. I started my career as an industrial and production engineer and in the process fell in love with optimisation and data. I quickly became aware of the impact big data can have in extracting critical information and its influence on decision-making, which prompted me to pursue higher education so I could focus on a career working in this space. There is so much data and information available these days, but the power of data lies in being able to understand the information and what it is telling you. With our modelling and forecasting information we can improve water security decision-making by providing insights on what additional water supply sources may be needed in the future, where they may need to be located and how much water they will need to produce, as well as also highlighting any possible limitations. In helping prepare for the future, we also input variables into the water supply system modelling, such as changes to industrial water use and how these changes could impact the demand on our future bulk water supply. My team and I are often assisting our colleagues to work out the relationship between what a piece of data is telling us and what changes may occur. I enjoy working with my colleagues and seeing first-hand the value my work in helping the organisation make smart decisions to plan for the future.” J-18808-Ljbffr • Fri, 01 MarSeqwater
