With this advanced skill acquisition and experience comes fast-tracked career progression; the sky’s the limit to how far you can go We are experiencing a period of growth at Griffith Base Hospital and are expanding the Specialist Paediatric team, we have multiple opportunities for Staff Specialist Paediatricians, we are flexible to be able to offer full and part-time, permanent and fixed term contract options. Our Paediatricians have a passion for providing world class paediatric services in a rural environment. As key figures you will promote patient quality and safety whilst providing leadership, training, supervision, and education. The hospital has a 10 inpatient beds on the Children's Ward, 4 day surgery beds in the paediatric ward and 4 Special Care Nursery beds. There are approximately 600 births per year. Griffith Base Hospital is associated with four universities – University of New South Wales, University of Wollongong, University of Notre Dame and Charles Sturt University. Medical students are based in Griffith for year-long rotations and short four week rotations. The University of New South Wales runs a twelve month research program for medical students in Griffith. Specialist medical officers have the opportunity to teach and supervise medical students. All four of the universities can offer conjoint academic appointments. Griffith Base Hospital Redevelopment The $250 million Griffith Base Hospital redevelopment will deliver Griffith and the surrounding communities with state-of-the art health facilities and enhanced health services closer to home. All major health services at the Griffith Base Hospital will be housed under one roof, in the purpose-built three storey Clinical Services Building designed to support contemporary models of care. The Victorian Fetal Alcohol Service (VicFAS) is a specialist assessment service based at the Monash Children’s Hospital, which undertakes multi-disciplinary diagnosis of children with prenatal alcohol exposure and complex neurological, developmental, and behavioural symptoms. The service provides clinical training in Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) diagnosis for paediatricians, psychologists, speech therapists, teachers, occupational therapists, and social workers. A secondary consultation service is available for paediatricians. VicFAS is led by the Head of FASD Services, Developmental and Community Paediatrics and the team includes a Clinic Coordinator, paediatrician, neuropsychologist, school teacher, speech therapist, social worker and occupational therapist. Children referred from a statewide catchment for assessment with VicFAS will typically experience severe impairments in multiple areas including cognition, attention, learning, speech and language, motor skills, executive function or adaptive functioning. They will have a history of prenatal alcohol exposure and are also likely to experience other complex psychosocial factors affecting their development and functioning. VicFAS current service extends within Regional Victoria to provide additional diagnosis, support and education to children aged 3-10yrs, families and health practitioners. The Regional VicFAS program involves diagnostic outreach clinics to regional sites, a Regional Consultation service, and support to the regional VicFAS navigators. The VicFAS is supported by the Developmental Paediatrics team at Monash Children’s Hospital. About the Role There is an opportunity for a Paediatrician experienced in Developmental paediatrics to contribute to the VicFAS team at Monash Children’s Hospital, to undertake assessment of children with pre-natal alcohol exposure and broader neurodevelopmental problems who have been identified as being at risk of FASD. The Paediatrician will attend monthly clinics to provide high level clinical assessments, contribute to multidisciplinary formulation, provide education to students and trainees, provide feedback to families and caregivers, and clinical recommendations as part of a multi-disciplinary team. They will provide secondary consultation advice and review of reports to paediatricians to assist in local diagnosis and management. Further training in relation to FASD is supported and facilitated by the Service. Research involvement will be integrated with clinical duties. The Paediatrician will also participate in a range of development activities for the service not specific to their professional discipline. This may include representation at forums with peer programs or conducting FASD-specific activities for nominated patients or other activities as directed. This is a part time (0.15EFT, 10.5 hrs per fortnight), fixed term (through till June 2025) role. Preferred days: to be discussed. Monthly paediatric clinic and case conference are Thursday. Non clinical days can be flexible. Location: The role is based at Monash Children’s Hospital, Clayton. Travel to regional sites (Geelong, Bendigo, Sale) for total of 3/ year for clinics is required, with the option of additional clinics if agreed with manager.
