This position will specifically bring expertise in infectious disease epidemiology and modelling.The ODeSI team (https://clinical-research.centre.uq.edu.au/odesi) has internationally recognised expertise in neglected tropical diseases, emerging infectious diseases, vaccine preventable diseases, and travel medicine. ODeSI's mission is to optimise infectious disease prevention, control, and elimination by generating new evidence and providing innovative solutions that support clinical and public health decision making. The team has strong multidisciplinary partnerships with clinical and public health decision makers, collaborating with them to co-design research, implement and evaluate interventions, and explore the application of innovative methods and new technologies for disease prevention and control. ODeSI has extensive experience in operational research and field surveys (including international projects), predictive risk mapping and modelling (spatial epidemiology), clinical trials, disease surveillance, and the use of novel methods including Bayesian network, machine learning, social network analysis and dynamic data visualisation tools.Through UQ's Health Research Accelerator Program (HERA), the ODeSI team plans to expand its operational research activities in Australia and the Asia Pacific. By collaborating with data science and digital health experts across UQ, the team will also capitalise on advances in information technologies and data analytics to optimise evidence synthesis, information sharing, knowledge dissemination, risk communication, and decision making related to infectious diseases. The National Vision Research Institute (NVRI) is the research division of the ACO, and this position sits within the NVRI. The DOVS/NVRI joint appointment will be research-focused with selected teaching contributions. This position will advance modern optometric eye care and public health, through collaborative, interdisciplinary research and education provision that positively impacts the health and well-being of the community. The role will involve working with staff across both organisations, to strengthen strategic collaborative ties and increase joint research capabilities and outcomes. The appointee will develop and engage in innovative collaborative research that could encompass several potential areas, including clinical research, public health, research translation and implementation science. The goal will be to build successful and strategic partnerships, and collaborate with a range of stakeholders and partners, both within and beyond the academy, in Australia and internationally. Your responsibilities will include: Contributing to teaching in entry-to-practice and postgraduate programs within the University Working between the ACO/NVRI and DOVS and aligned centres at the University of Melbourne (such as the Centre for Collaborative Practice) to advance how optometry can best serve its communities Participating in community and professional activities relevant to the discipline area, including attendance and presentations at conferences and seminars Who We Are Looking For You are an experienced academic, able to demonstrate strong evidence of research achievement, relative to your career stage and opportunities, along with having a compelling desire to positively impact optometry, whether in research, practice, or education. Your New Team – Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences The Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences currently comprises twenty-four academic staff (10 teaching and research, 5 teaching specialist and 9 research only). The Department is located 200 Berkeley Street on the Parkville Campus, along with UMeyecare and, has a footprint for its Visual Neuroscience research groups in the Kenneth Myer Building alongside the Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health. The Department in 2009 opened UMeyecare clinic which provides private practice and clinical training for Optometry students and service to students and staff of the University, as well as to the general public. In 2011 the Department commenced the 4-year Doctor of Optometry (OD) postgraduate degree as part of the new Melbourne Model; approximately 300 students are enrolled in this entry-to-practice professional optometry program.The department also teaches vision science-related subjects in the Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Biomedicine degree s and contributes breadth subjects in the new generation degrees offered by the University. The Department has a vigorous and expanding research program in vision sciences with particular emphasis on the research areas of i) the biological foundations and detection of ocular disease; ii) visual neuroscience and visual neurophysiology. This is achieved through discovery research, applied research in health service settings, research-led teaching in health and medical sciences, and the translation of research findings into practice and policy. The ANU College of Health and Medicine comprises the Research School of Psychology, the ANU Medical School, the John Curtin School of Medical Research and the Research School of Population Health. The ANU rural medicine program, delivered through the Rural Clinical School (RCS), provides access to medical education for students from rural locations, and offers rural learning experiences for all students in the MChD program. The successful candidate will work alongside scientists and clinicians to conduct animal studies and laboratory work in protocols investigating preterm birth including use of an artificial placenta for extremely preterm babies, optimisation of antenatal steroid therapy and postnatal ventilation studies investigating lung injury. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with collaborators across Australia, Singapore, Japan, Chile, and the US. The role will allow the development of a broad range of skills that can be transferred to any research environment. In this role, you will (but are not limited to): Conduct animal studies including animal handling, monitoring and intervention. Careful and accurate documentation of experimental procedures and outcomes. Laboratory analysis including PCR, western blot, LC-MS, histology – preparation of tissue, staining and imaging. Administration tasks including scheduling, logistics and technical support tasks. Assist with routine laboratory duties including monitoring of stock levels, ordering consumables, scheduling maintenance of laboratory equipment, and the preparation of SOPs. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with collaborators across Australia, Singapore, Japan, Chile, and the US. The role will allow the development of a broad range of skills that can be transferred to any research environment. In this role, you will (but are not limited to): Conduct animal studies including animal handling, monitoring and intervention. Careful and accurate documentation of experimental procedures and outcomes. Laboratory analysis including PCR, western blot, LC-MS, histology – preparation of tissue, staining and imaging. Administration tasks including scheduling, logistics and technical support tasks. Assist with routine laboratory duties including monitoring of stock levels, ordering consumables, scheduling maintenance of laboratory equipment, and the preparation of SOPs. About Genomics, Imaging, and AI Laboratory: The Genomics, Imaging, and AI Laboratory at QIMR Berghofer is part of the Population Health Program. With a primary focus on neurodegenerative disorders of the eye and brain, the lab employs statistical genetics and artificial intelligence (particularly machine learning) methodologies to advance gene discovery and improve risk prediction for these diseases. Role Purpose / Responsibilities: We are recruiting a highly motivated and organised Research Assistant / Postdoctoral Researcher to contribute to research studies focused on neurodegenerative diseases affecting the eye and brain, such as glaucoma, dementia, and Parkinson's disease. Early detection and intervention play a crucial role in managing the risks for developing these conditions. Our ongoing studies utilise machine learning and statistical methods to analyse existing ocular and neuroimaging data. We aim to enhance the prediction of risks associated with these conditions.
